AMENRA ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF MASS VI INCOMING ON NEUROT RECORDINGS THIS OCTOBER; RECORD RELEASE SHOW ALSO REVEALED

Contrasts have always been deep, and at the very heart of AMENRA's music, ever since they started uttering their Prayers and holding their Masses, almost 18 years ago. Tormented darkness has always coexisted alongside luminous beauty, thunderous impacts instantly followed by frail, delicate subtleties. Songs that seem to engulf everyone in the world at once suddenly feel like they are being whispered to you inside the isolation of your solitary womb. The time that we have waited for a new Mass, this Mass VI that is now finally materialized and ready to consume and be consumed, seems itself to also be a double-edged sword – on one hand, and although Nowena | 9.10,Mass V's closer, seems as final as anything we've ever heard, like something that should be playing when the world itself comes to an end, we are parched all the same for new AMENRA songs to enter our life and remain there as the others from the past have done, and continue to do during the band's impassioned live performances.

On the other hand, the wounds inflicted by Mass V still have not turned to scars, they still itch and they have been made wider by the ways the band has found to interpret their material in different ways in the last few years, from acoustic performances and recordings to several collaborations with like-minded artists, there hasn't been any kind of absence or withdrawal.

In any case, ready or not, Mass VI is here, and more than any other album in AMENRA's past, it highlights those contrasts in a deeply affecting way. Mass VI shall arrive on 20th October through Neurot Recordings, read on for further details...

As always with AMENRA, this art has come directly from the souls of the musicians involved, they are capable of establishing connections with their listeners more profound than almost any other band because they are direct heart to heart connections. Thus, this pain, this sorrow, and also these fleeting moments of joy, they come from those hearts. They are all too real.

"It took us a couple of years as always to find the right mindset to write an new album. Works of music whose creation was fuelled by pure necessity," Colin van Eeckhout explains. "We needed to write, at this point. Finding inspiration in depression, sorrow and despair. Levy found himself in a dark place for some time, where he shut himself off from everyone to write new music. It was the first Mass album he helped writing, and his being is felt throughout the entire album. Lebon, our drummer, celebrated the birth of his newborn son. We were all saddened by Mathieu's father's cancer and are mourning the loss of Lebon's beloved mother. And for me, personally, my firstborn son had a tumor removed from inside his head. It seriously shook my ground. Fate strikes and strokes. Where there is Love there is Pain."

No love without pain. No life without death. No light without darkness. That is the conflict at the heart of Mass VI, at the heart of each and every one of us, at the heart of what it means to be human, to live and to love and to lose, and few other pieces of music will wrench that ambivalence out of us and present it in such an acutely overwhelming fashion.

It's hard to think of a better person to capture this sonic enormity than Billy Anderson. The legendary American producer was already the chosen one for Mass V, and between Neurosis' Through Silver In Blood, Sleep's Dopesmoker, Eyehategod's Dopesick, Cathedral's Endtyme or Brutal Truth's Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom, among many, many others, he's been a decisive element in the building of many a true classic. Mass VI was recorded in the Belgian Ardennes, a region of thick forests in the south-east of the country, where the band was snowed in for a week.

Below you'll find some imagery of the inner artwork of the record created by the wonderful Stephan Vanfleteren (who also took the band photos) we'll be sharing the official cover art along with further album details and pre-orders soon.

NEUROSIS To Reissue Out-Of-Print Second Album The Word As Law In August

NEUROSIS will reissue the band’s second LP, The Word As Law, in August, the album having remained out-of-print since the 1990s.

While listening to NEUROSIS’ discography in chronological order, their sound gradually shifts in a very steady and somewhat seamless progression with each record, though their first few albums are undoubtedly cut from their 80s punk influences and surroundings. The Word As Law was initially released on vinyl only in 1990 through Lookout! Records, alongside the likes of Operation Ivy, Green Day, Screeching Weasel and other Bay Area punk acts of the time. Upbeat rhythms and enraged vocals fuel The Word As Law, the record picking up where their Pain Of Mind debut’s ripping punk sound left off, while the band simultaneously began experimenting with more dissonant, melancholic, and demoralizing tones that would carve the foundation for their next few albums and their signature sound.

NEUROSIS had yet to infuse keyboards or synthesizers into the mix when The Word As Law was recorded by Mark Lemaire at Sound & Vision in San Francisco of December 1989. The blend of vocals delivered by guitarist Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson, and new inductee on this album, guitarist Steve Von Till, driven by the powerful rhythms of drummer Jason Roeder, coalesce to formulate an eerie and original sound on The Word As Law, which results in the album’s cult status as an incredibly groundbreaking album for countless crust punk, hardcore, and experimental metal artists worldwide.

While prior reissues of the album featured several re-recorded bonus tracks from the band’s prior singles and releases, the 2017 Neurot reissue of The Word As Law will bear the album’s initial eight tracks, all completely remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering. Additionally, the album’s cover artwork has been reworked and modernized by NEUROSIS’ former live visual architect Josh Graham to match the label’s previously-reissued Souls At Zero, Enemy Of The Sun, and other titles.

NEUROSIS’ own Neurot Recordings will reissue The Word As Law on CD, LP, and digital formats on August 25th, directly following their US tour with Converge and Amenra and their performance at Psycho Las Vegas.

See all confirmed tour dates below and find preorder links for The Word As Law at THIS LOCATION.

The Word As Law Track Listing:

1. Double Edged Sword

2. The Choice

3. Obsequious Obsolescence

4. To What End?

5. Tomorrow's Reality

6. Common Inconsistencies

7. Insensitivity

8. Blisters

I still remember the first time I heard The Word As Law, shortly after it was released in 1990. From the first chords of “Double-Edged Sword” I was hooked – the sounds seemed to send some sort of powerful electrical current coursing through my body – and by the time the feedback faded out at the end of “Blisters” I was emotionally spent. I had never heard anything like it: The Word As Law completely changed my understanding of three different musical genres – punk, hardcore, and metal.

The record blends elements of all three. There is the raw moodiness of punk. The ferocity and anger of hardcore. The musicianship and dynamics of metal. But The Word As Law transcends all those labels, in the process creating something utterly unique.

It hit me on so many levels. It spoke to the anger I had as a young punk, my sense that I was trapped in a dog-eat-dog world of relentless capitalist competition, my alienation from the broader society. But it also resonated on a deeper level. My father killed himself when I was a teenager, leaving me mourning, feeling as if I were surrounded by a thick fog of despair. The Word As Law is not a happy collection of songs, but it played this incredibly positive and cathartic role in my life. Listening to it over and over, gave me an odd sense of comfort. I realized that I wasn’t the only person struggling with deep emotional turmoil and found myself slowly working through the anger and grief that had enveloped me.

More than twenty-five years later they are still my favorite band. And I still try to attend every NEUROSIS show I can.

The Word As Law was a massive influence on an entire generation of bands including my own, Econochrist. It’s the bridge to what NEUROSIS would become in later years. So, put it back on your turntable. Step to the front the falling is today. -- Ben Sizemore/Econochrist

UFOMAMMUT: Italian Psychedelic Sorcerers Premiere “Zodiac” From Neurot Recordings-Bound 8 LP Via Cvlt Nation; Preorders Posted

Italy’s UFOMAMMUT has issued a thundering new single from their impending eighth studio album, 8, ahead of its September release through Neurot Recordings.

Recorded at Crono Sound Factory in Vimodrone, Milano, Italy, 8 is a major turning point in the heavy alchemic arts, with the elements of UFOMAMMUT’s recording constellation being re-aligned. Although the musicians within the collective remain unturned, a change in recording approach saw the trio playing and recording live together in the same room, even utilizing their live sound engineer Ciccio and his project Femore for production purposes, with Fabrizio San Pietro on mixing duties. Overdubs were used only for vocals, synth sounds, and minor details, with the result of the endeavor being a stricter focus on the soul, darkened groove, and overall cohesion of the music and themselves as musicians. In turn, 8 clarified to UFOMAMMUT who they are as a unit now and their new sonic path…

The longest track on the new album, “Zodiac” thunders with nearly nine-and-a-half minutes of UFOMAMMUT’s psychedelic, groove-laden, sprawling metal, a prime example of the tonal sci-fi obliteration 8 delivers.

The band offers of the new single, “Zodiac is the circular moving of the portion of the sky where we live, a circle that influence our being and what we are, it represents our turning around the tree of life, that is the sun. Zodiac is the central song of the new album, it seems to end several times, but it starts again and again. 'All is nothing and nothing is all, like an endless loop of time'."

Immerse yourself in UFOMAMMUT’s “Zodiac” at Cvlt Nation RIGHT HERE.

8 is due for release on September 22nd on vinyl and CD formats via Neurot Recordings and on a limited and regular edition vinyl via Supernatural Cat; the limited edition 7” for the “Warsheep” single is out now. EU preorders for the limited 8 LP can be placed HERE and for US preorders go HERE

Laden with symbolic nuances, 8 most obviously gestures towards this being UFOMAMMUT’s eighth offering, comprised of eight stunningly immersive tracks that flow into each other without interruption. This flow can also be seen when you tip 8 horizontally, thus it morphs into the leniscate from algebraic geometry [∞], a plane curve that meets at central point, more commonly known as the infinity symbol. A continuous stream of movement reflective of the uninterrupted nature of the album but also the continued togetherness of the essential elements of the band – Urlo, Poia and Vita – since the beginning of the band’s history. ∞ tipped vertically sees us return to the number 8. It must be stressed there is no singular pronunciation of the title, 8 is to be spoken in every language; “eight” in English, “otto” in Italian, “acht” in German, and so on.

Sonically and symbolically, 8 is not only wickedly limitless in its heaviness, power, and commanding nature, but how it arrests the listener’s mind creating a wholly unbounded and impenetrable sensory experience. The album is a continuous flux of music, a singular entity, which can be defined in micro measurements by its eight satellite songs. Each track expands upon the preceding song, unfolding into an exceedingly dense, malevolent and formidable journey, resulting in this being UFOMAMMUT’s most extreme outing yet, with zero breathing room in the forty-eight-minute venture. The album’s predecessor Ecate has now been put to rest and we can be assured that 8 is an essential turning point in the infinity that is UFOMMAMUT’s sonic signature.

DEAFKIDS: Neurot Recordings To Release Configuração Do Lamento On Vinyl And CD For The First Time This October; "Pés Atados" Video Posted

Brazilian avant mavericks DEAFKIDS will be releasing their masterful album Configuração Do Lamento for the first time on vinyl and CD formats this October 6th via Neurot Recordings.

Neurot label founder and member of Neurosis Steve Von Till explains how he came across the band: "I first read about DEAFKIDS when I saw a headline from Cvlt Nation that read, ‘This Band Sounds Like No Other!’ My cynical nature believed that to be a tall order, so I decided to call their bluff and clicked on the stream… MIND BLOWN. I was not prepared for how much I would love this record. Raw, powerful, and explosive heavy psych. I think I listened to it three times in a row right then and there. I played it for my bandmates the first time we were all in a room together and we all agreed, ‘We need to put out a DEAFKIDS record.’ So here it is, for the first time on vinyl and CD, that very same DEAFKIDS recording that first lured me into their sonic world."

DEAFKIDSConfiguração Do Lamento is an untamed release, happy to juxtapose monolithic drone riffage with frantic polyrhythmic detours, the band citing the syncopated beats of African drums as a major influence. It is a guttural, scorched mutation of psychedelia, that similar intent of frying the listener's perception, while void of anything approaching earthy wistfulness, wholly fluid in nature, paying no heed to any musical expectations other than the creators own internal logic. A bombardment of clanging percussion sits below relentless guitar battering, and a whole host of electronic tamperings, effects which in practice manage to further confound the proceedings. Using the term psychedelic in the absolute loosest sense is apt, as the band claims that “non-genre genres” are a chief source of inspiration, referencing anything from their own background in punk, right the way through to spiritual jazz, practically any form which allows the artist to experiment with the utter extremes of musical expression.

A key theme at the heart of this singular record is the crisis of identity within a colonized country, the conflict that arises when an imperialist culture is enforced, resulting in a drastic feeling of displacement. The music alone illuminates this theme, various contrasting influences seeping into the bands sound. As a project, they speak of the ramifications of cultural hegemony specific to Brazil, specifying that, "thanks to the way colonization happened here, a certain part of the Brazilian experience is bounded by a sense of fracture -- we're sons of the border... here and there."

Though the contextual aspects of the band are fascinating, they also insist that with music, there is a vital importance in surrendering to a degree of "non-rationality, on the sense that it should not be used as a narrative resource for spreading verbal/mental ideas". It's this collision of political outrage set against complete bodily and mental release, that makes DEAFKIDSConfiguração Do Lamento an undoubtedly fearless and inspiring piece of work.

Watch and share DEAFKIDS’ new video created for the track "Pés Atados" HERE.

Neurot Recordings will release Configuração Do Lamento on 10” vinyl and CD formats on October 6th; stand by for preorder links and more in the weeks ahead.

DEAFKIDS will support Neurosis during their first visit to São Paulo on the 8th of December. More news and video clips will be released shortly.

UFOMAMMUT SHARE NEW SONG "WARSHEEP" VIA NEW VIDEO, APPEARING ON 7" SINGLE AND FEATURING ON THEIR UPCOMING ALBUM 8 (NEUROT RECORDINGS, 22ND SEPTEMBER); PLUS TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

[still image from "Warsheep" video]

The Italian alchemic juggernaut, Ufomammut, masters of melding uncompromisingly heavy magic with psychedelic swirls, recently announced news of a brand new studio recording, 8, which will arrive on 22nd September via Neurot Recordings.

Prior to the album's release, the trio delight fans with an early extract from the record in the form of a video for the song "Warsheep" which you can view below. The band describe their intentions of the video..."it is inspired by the lyrics of the song which in itself is a play on the words "Worship". The protagonist takes a symbolic journey from the natural human condition to the trappings of the dogmas of society, religion etc. The principle idea being that thought is blind and is caged into the illusion of being free." Adding to the video's eerie atmosphere, the setting is in an abandoned villa in Italy, and the surrounding woodland.

In the spirit of record collecting rituals, and to offer something special to fans ahead of the full album release, Ufomammut are also sharing "Warsheep" as a limited edition 7". Available in a small run of 500 pieces, and with the cover handprinted with gold iridescent and red inks on pearlescent paper by Malleus, the record will be released via Supernatural Cat on 15th June, and will be available for pre-order via the label's website, and via Neurot stores too. This flow can also be seen when you tip 8 horizontally, thus it morphs into the leniscate from algebraic geometry - ∞ - a plane curve that meets at central point - or more commonly known as the infinity symbol. A continuous stream of movement reflective of the uninterrupted nature of the album but also the continued togetherness of the essential elements of the band – Urlo, Poia and Vita – since the beginning of the band’s history. ∞ tipped vertically sees us return to the number 8. It must be stressed there is no singular pronunciation of the title, 8 is to be spoken in every language e.g. “eight” in English, “otto” in Italian, “acht” in German and so on.
As stated, 8 is a continuous flux of music, a singular entity, which can be defined in micro measurements by its eight satellite songs. Each track expands upon the preceding song, unfolding into an exceedingly dense, malevolent and formidable journey, resulting in this being Ufomammut’s most extreme venture yet, with no permittance for breathing space in the 48 minutes. The album’s predecessor Ecate has now been put to rest and we can be assured that 8 is an essential turning point in the infinity that is Ufommamut’s sonic.

Recorded at Crono Sound Factory in Vimodrone, Milano (IT), 8 is a major turning point in the heavy alchemic arts, with the elements of Ufomammut’s recording constellation being re-aligned. Although the musicians within Ufomammut’s collective remain unturned, a change in recording approach saw the trio playing and recording live together in the same room, even utilising their live sound engineer Ciccio and his project FEMORE for production purposes, with Fabrizio San Pietro on mixing duties. Overdubs were used only for vocals, synth sounds and small details with the result of such endeavour being a stricter focus on the soul, darkened groove and overall cohesion of the music and themselves as musicians. In turn, 8 clarified to Ufomammut who they are as a unit now and their new sonic path…

8 is due for release on September 22nd on vinyl and CD formats via Neurot Recordings and on a limited and regular edition vinyl via Supernatural Cat. Pre order information, and more to be revealed over the coming months.

HARVESTMAN: Music For Megaliths Out Now

Music for Megaliths, the fourth release from HARVESTMAN — a solo project of Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till — is out now via Neurot Recordings.

Order Music for Megaliths on CD, LP and digital formats now through the Neurot Recordings webstore HERE

As with previous HARVESTMAN works, Music For Megaliths shows Von Till handling electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects and vocals. And, what’s more, the album was fully performed, recorded, and mixed at Von Till's own studio, The Crow’s Nest, in Northern Idaho. Neurosis’ Jason Roeder provides drums to the track “Levitation.” The album’s exploratory, mood-altering, spiritual atmospheres were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album was completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Noisey continues to stream Music for Megaliths in full right HERE.

“The album is a great example of the ever-bountiful intersection between heavy metal and experimental music, feeling like the former without ever exploding into pounding riffs and drums.” — Noisey

“Harvestman, yet another killer project from Neurosis's Steve Von Till … is ambient, relaxing music to lose yourself in, and it's pretty great. Though when has Steve Von Till release music that isn't fantastic in its own unique way?” — Metal Injection

“A soothing adventure, [“Levitation”] is one that lulls the listener into a daze with it’s hypnotic circular melodies and rhythms.” — Overblown

HARVESTMAN: Neurosis Frontman Steve Von Till’s Exploratory Project Returns With Music For Megaliths

Neurot Recordings presents the fourth full-length recorded document from HARVESTMAN – one of Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till’s solo ventures – with the impending release of Music For Megaliths.

As with prior HARVESTMAN and other solo releases by Steve Von Till, Music For Megaliths sees the artist handling a wide array of instruments and approaches, including vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects, and more, fully performed, recorded, and mixed at his own The Crow’s Nest studio in Northern Idaho. Neurosis’ Jason Roeder also provides drums to the album’s fifth track, “Levitation.” The seven sonically and mentally expansive tracks were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Confirming the album for release on May 19th, Neurot has unveiled the artwork, track listing, and more for the exploratory new album, with audio samples and more to be released in the coming weeks.

Music For Megaliths Track Listing:

1. The Forest Is Our Temple

2. Oak Drone

3. Ring Of Sentinels

4. Cromlech

5. Levitation

6. Sundown

7. White Horse

“Ruins, monuments, and ancient sites of worship are multi-sensory experiences – at once residues of the sacred, the parchment on which the passage of time has been inscribed and templates for imaginative reconstruction, spaces in which to invest and immerse, to trade your bearings for an inexhaustible state of transition.

Over the course of three albums, Steve Von Till has, under the guise of HARVESTMAN, provided the sonic analogue, casting his net for what might have been and yet still be. Both a personal meditation and a tuning fork for the most ancient and enduring of resonances, his latest album, Music For Megaliths, further expands his journeys along the sonic ley lines that run between folk, drone, psychedelia, the “kosmische” outposts of krautrock and noise: not as an act of eclecticism, but of divination, giving voice to an underlying continuity that binds them all.

Recorded over a period of several years in the dawn hours of creation, Music For Megaliths is an aggregation of moments and recordings that have allowed themselves to spell out a greater whole. Utilizing repetition, manipulation, and modulation, it’s a hallowed frequency dial that ranges across the pulse-regulated drone of “The Forest Is Our Temple,” revving up like a generator powered by arcane currents, the blissful gaze of “Ring Of Sentinels,” “Sundown”’s ominous waves of interference and “White Horse”’s rite of dissolution and regeneration, nomadic and devout. Music For Megaliths is a crossing over, whose multiple routes are testament to a singular and sensuously dilated vision.” – words by Jonathan Selzer, 2017

NEUROSIS: Eleventh Studio Album Fires Within Fires Playing At Noisey; Album Out This Friday Via Neurot Recordings

A massive milestone in the ongoing and unstoppable legacy of NEUROSIS falls into alignment as the band unveils their eleventh studio album, Fires Within Fires, through their own Neurot Recordings this Friday. Preceding the album’s street date, the entire record - recorded by Steve Albini, and featuring cover artwork by Thomas Hooper -- is now streaming worldwide through multiple channels of Vice’s music channel, Noisey.

Noisey issues alongside the stream, "What more can be said about NEUROSIS that hasn't already been written, re-written, and re-written once again? They're giants in a field obsessed with hugeness-hugeness of riff, of amplifier, of decibel, of ambition-and are a seemingly unbreakable sonic force. When Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Jason Roeder, Noah Landis, and Dave Edwardson come together (and especially when they do so under the steady hand of longstanding engineer Steve Albini) the result is the kind of tectonic earth magic that the word doom was invented to personify. Whatever it is they continue to seek, this latest offering is a massive step forward towards it."

Stream NEUROSIS’ entire Fires Within Fires early at THIS LOCATION.

NEUROSIS’ Fires Within Fires will see worldwide release on CD, LP, cassette, and all digital platforms this Friday, September 23rd; see the wide array of preorder bundles and options RIGHT HERE.

Decibel Magazine released an entire issue dedicated to NEUROSIS including multiple rare Hall Of Fame features as well as a full feature on the new album, a very brief section of the coverage praising, “NEUROSIS have redefined what heavy meant and what heavy could be, all while refusing to define themselves as anything more than conduits for the music they conjure like diviners. Now releasing their eleventh LP, Fires Within Fires, they’ve ascended from the trappings of youth to alter the landscape of heavy music like the violent shift of tectonic plates.” Alternative Press forewarned in their 12 Metal Albums You’re Going To Need In The Second Half Of 2016 feature, “NEUROSIS have been endlessly creative and relevant for every stage of their now three-decade career…. Every part of their discography is essential, and this will be another welcome chapter in their story.”

The Wire gave the album an entire full-page review in their October issue which included, “Fires Within Fires is the summation of thirty years of experimentation in tonality and texture. Yes, NEUROSIS are firmly positioned within the extreme metal underground yet their music, with its ability to generate images of beauty akin to those many of us have experienced in our own lives - not to mention the loss that accompanies them - challenges this categorization. This is the band's aim; to confront the listener and through sharing their own experiences and impressions offer a template to explore the profundity and profanity of our past and future lives." Terrorizer’s album of the month review for September offers, "Fires Within Fires sees NEUROSIS evoking both the primitive elements of their early years and the polished grace of their current form. A worthy addition to their legacy, their fire burns on."

NEUROSIS continues to book additional upcoming live performances around the release of Fires Within Fires, adding several new shows to their tour schedule. Following the previously-announced London shows with Earth November 7th and Discharge and Subhumans November 8th, and two shows in Portland with labelmates Yob and Kowloon Walled City November 25th and 26th, the newest additions come in the form of two California shows in December, leading with a set in San Francisco on December 17th, also with support from Yob and Kowloon Walled City. The next night, December 18th will see NEUROSIS headlining the second night of The Power Of The Riff 2016, with six additional bands to be announced for the same evening. Two shows in Seattle and Vancouver follow, on December 19th and 20th, respectively, with support from Yob and Sumac.

On September 23rd, NEUROSIS take a dominant leap with their eleventh full-length, Fires Within Fires. Three decades in the making, and following 2012's Honor Found In Decay, the album is a testament both to the history and future of NEUROSIS.

In true Ouroborean style, Fires Within Fires gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Striking NEUROSIS's signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, dense sonic heaviness and reflective space. Fires Within Fires is succinct, raw and deeply soulful, an all-encompassing reminder to all that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength. Our first and only glimpse of the music on this record, prior to release date, is sampled in a new video which has emerged, here you can also marvel at the exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper.

The journey of their music has found the band relishing the unpredictable, embracing the unknown and exploring the possibility of where the music was capable of taking them. Going beyond the remarkable, NEUROSIS has become unforgettable. Fires Within Fires is the next powerful step towards a destination that has long been and continues to be the very heart of "becoming" for NEUROSIS.
