HARVESTMAN: Music For Megaliths Out Now

Music for Megaliths, the fourth release from HARVESTMAN — a solo project of Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till — is out now via Neurot Recordings.

Order Music for Megaliths on CD, LP and digital formats now through the Neurot Recordings webstore HERE

As with previous HARVESTMAN works, Music For Megaliths shows Von Till handling electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects and vocals. And, what’s more, the album was fully performed, recorded, and mixed at Von Till's own studio, The Crow’s Nest, in Northern Idaho. Neurosis’ Jason Roeder provides drums to the track “Levitation.” The album’s exploratory, mood-altering, spiritual atmospheres were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album was completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Noisey continues to stream Music for Megaliths in full right HERE.

“The album is a great example of the ever-bountiful intersection between heavy metal and experimental music, feeling like the former without ever exploding into pounding riffs and drums.” — Noisey

“Harvestman, yet another killer project from Neurosis's Steve Von Till … is ambient, relaxing music to lose yourself in, and it's pretty great. Though when has Steve Von Till release music that isn't fantastic in its own unique way?” — Metal Injection

“A soothing adventure, [“Levitation”] is one that lulls the listener into a daze with it’s hypnotic circular melodies and rhythms.” — Overblown

HARVESTMAN: Music For Megaliths By Neurosis’ Steve Von Till Streaming At Noisey; Album To See Release Next Week Through Neurot Recordings

Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till will release Music For Megaliths -- the anxiously-anticipated fourth album under the banner of his solo outfit, HARVESTMAN -- next week through Neurot Recordings. Advancing the album’s public release, Noisey is hosting an early listen to the exploratory album in its lush entirety.

“Neurosis singer/guitarist Steve Von Till makes music with his main band that more or less sounds like one of these boulders slowly colliding with your head, but his solo work under his own name and as the drone project HARVESTMAN provides a more placid kind of heaviness, as the new HARVESTMAN album Music For Megaliths demonstrates,” Noisey offers in part. “The album is a great example of the ever-bountiful intersection between heavy metal and experimental music, feeling like the former without ever exploding into pounding riffs and drums.”

Explore HARVESTMAN’s vast Music For Megaliths at Noisey RIGHT HERE.

As with prior HARVESTMAN and other solo releases by Steve Von Till, Music For Megaliths sees the artist handling a wide array of instruments and approaches, including vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects, and more, fully performed, recorded, and mixed at his own The Crow’s Nest in Northern Idaho. Neurosis’ Jason Roeder provides drums to the track “Levitation,” and the album’s exploratory, mood-altering, spiritual atmospheres were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album was completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Neurot Recordings will release HARVESTMAN‘s Music For Megaliths on CD, LP, and digital formats next Friday, May 19th; preorders and bundles are available at the Neurot webstore HERE.

"Ruins, monuments, and ancient sites of worship are multi-sensory experiences – at once residues of the sacred, the parchment on which the passage of time has been inscribed and templates for imaginative reconstruction, spaces in which to invest and immerse, to trade your bearings for an inexhaustible state of transition.

Over the course of three albums, Steve Von Till has, under the guise of HARVESTMAN, provided the sonic analogue, casting his net for what might have been and yet still be. Both a personal meditation and a tuning fork for the most ancient and enduring of resonances, his latest album, Music For Megaliths, further expands his journeys along the sonic ley lines that run between folk, drone, psychedelia, the “kosmische” outposts of krautrock and noise: not as an act of eclecticism, but of divination, giving voice to an underlying continuity that binds them all.

Recorded over a period of several years in the dawn hours of creation, Music For Megaliths is an aggregation of moments and recordings that have allowed themselves to spell out a greater whole. Utilizing repetition, manipulation, and modulation, it’s a hallowed frequency dial that ranges across the pulse-regulated drone of “The Forest Is Our Temple,” revving up like a generator powered by arcane currents, the blissful gaze of “Ring Of Sentinels,” “Sundown”’s ominous waves of interference and “White Horse”’s rite of dissolution and regeneration, nomadic and devout. Music For Megaliths is a crossing over, whose multiple routes are testament to a singular and sensuously dilated vision." – words by Jonathan Selzer, 2017

HARVESTMAN: Solo Project By Neurosis’ Steve Von Till Streams “Levitation” As Music For Megaliths Nears May Release Via Neurot Recordings

Steve Von Till’s HARVESTMAN – one of the Neurosis vocalist/guitarist’s solo ventures – will release its fourth album under the moniker through Neurot Recordings this May. As the anticipated new record grows closer to its official street date, a new single has been unveiled.

As with prior HARVESTMAN and other solo releases by Steve Von Till, Music For Megaliths sees the artist handling a wide array of instruments and approaches, including vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects, and more, fully performed, recorded, and mixed at his own The Crow’s Nest studio in Northern Idaho. The seven mentally expansive tracks were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Music For Megaliths’ fifth movement, “Levitation,” is the only track on the album to feature straightforward percussion, as the song features Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder on drums. The restrained but driving rhythms add a sense of perseverance to the album’s exploratory, mood-altering, spiritual atmosphere.

NEUROSIS REVEAL TWO VERY SPECIAL UK SHOWS TO MARK THEIR 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY, AND TO CELEBRATE THE RELEASE OF FIRES WITHIN FIRES RELEASE DATE: 23 SEPT, NEUROT RECORDINGS

Having marked their 30 year milestone with three shows in San Francisco and two shows at the much respected Roadburn Festival, and with a summer of touring across Europe on the horizon, the anticipation for something special in the UK is palpable. It therefore comes with great delight to announce two very special London shows in November this year with thrilling, and unexpected, special guests.

On Monday 7th November, Neurosis will be joined by Earth, and on Tuesday 8th November, they are joined by Discharge and Subhumans. These bands represent perfectly the cross-section of music which Neurosis as a collective deeply admire and relate to, which makes these two shows all the more important in this milestone year. Tickets go on sale today. All hi-res artwork across various platforms can be downloaded here.

Prior to that, on September 23rd, Neurosis take a dominant leap with their eleventh full-length, Fires Within Fires. Three decades in the making, and following 2012's Honor Found In Decay, the album is a testament both to the history and future of Neurosis. In true Ouroborean style, Fires Within Fires gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Striking the band's signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, dense sonic heaviness and reflective space. Fires Within Fires is succinct, raw and deeply soulful, an all-encompassing reminder that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength. Our first and only glimpse of the music on this record, prior to release date, is sampled in a new video which we shared last week, here you can also marvel at the exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper...

The journey of their music has found the band relishing the unpredictable, embracing the unknown and exploring the possibility of where the music was capable of taking them. Going beyond the remarkable, Neurosis have become unforgettable. Fires Within Fires is the next powerful step towards a destination that has long been and continues to be the very heart of "becoming" for Neurosis.

NEUROSIS To Enter The Studio; Band Adds Third San Francisco Thirtieth Anniversary Performance And Additional Euro Festival Tour

Passing their three decade mark this month, NEUROSIS has confirmed that the band will be returning to Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Steve Albini on December 27th to record their forthcoming brand new LP, their follow up to 2012's Honor Found In Decay. Additional details on the album and its approximate release in 2016 will be revealed in the early months of the year.

NEUROSIS will celebrate their thirty-year milestone with a series of performances where they will deliver a massive two-hour set list, invoking material spanning their entire recorded lineage, from 1987’s Pain Of Mind through 2012’s Honor Found In Decay, with varied set lists at each event. These sets will span the band’s entire career, showcasing the comprehensive evolution, from their primitive beginnings into the seminal, epic outfit of today, as the band’s ever evolving, sonic palette has become a genre-defying template for underground music over the last three decades, avoiding genre classification.

NEUROSIS has added a third show at the Regency Ballroom in their origin of San Francisco in March. The newly-confirmed third show will take place on Sunday, March 6th, at the Regency Ballroom. NEUROSIS has selected special opening acts to open this show, today confirming the participation of longtime Detroit hardcore punk legends, Negative Approach, as well as extremely influential Salem-based punk/metal experimenters, Converge. Tickets for the March 6th show will go on sale January 6th at 10 am PST. The previously announced show March 3rd with support from Sleep and March 4th with support from Shellac have both sold out.
The following month, NEUROSIS will headline two nights at the mighty Roadburn Festival in Holland, April 16th and 17th, again bringing their thirtieth anniversary sets to fans, with those shows led by special solo performances by guitarist/vocalists Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till together on April 15th.

NEUROSIS has also announced an additional set of European tour dates separate from the thirtieth anniversary performances, returning to the European continent for a run of festival performances in August, including Festa Radio Onda D'Urto in Italy, Oya Festival in Norway, Motocultor Festival in France and Amplifest in Portugal.

SCOTT KELLY And STEVE VON TILL To Complete The NEUROSIS Experience With Solo Performances At Roadburn 2016

Following recent announcements of NEUROSIS celebrating their 30th anniversary with several live sets in early 2016, including Roadburn Festival, both STEVE VON TILL and SCOTT KELLY have also just confirmed a special night of solo performances at this year’s Roadburn as well.

NEUROSIS is so much more than a band. At times, they seem to be at the heart of a sentient organism, fully functioning all by itself, with the activities of their members and of the entire Neurot family constituting the remaining organs and limbs of this fascinating creature. None of those activities are more deeply connected and wrapped around that ever-beating heart than the solo careers of guitarists/vocalists SCOTT KELLY and STEVE VON TILL themselves. Therefore, it is but natural that the NEUROSIS 30th anniversary celebrations that will take place at Roadburn will also include a typically intimate and profoundly touching solo performance by each of the two musicians.

SCOTT KELLY and STEVE VON TILL will therefore complete the weekend-long NEUROSIS anniversary experience with both performances taking place at the Het Patronaat on Friday, April 15th. Each of them will be a life unto itself that must not be missed.

_______________________________________

Like NEUROSIS themselves, and most of their related other projects, it is not the first time Roadburners will have the immense honor and pleasure to witness these two men alone on a stage pouring their souls out, much more vulnerable and naked than usual, displaying their tremendous courage. Both of them performed solo on the European version of their Beyond The Pale event which enriched the 2009 edition beyond our wildest dreams, and SCOTT KELLY had also played the year before, marking the release of his harrowing second album, The Wake. In these last few years, however, much has happened in artistic terms that will make these concerts an equally fascinating, yet decisively different endeavor. Although he had already released two solo records when he first stepped on his own on the Roadburn stage, the bleakly atmospheric Spirit Bound Flesh and the aforementioned starkly minimalist The Wake, he has since been particularly active as a stage performer outside Neurosis, touring Europe and the United States several times, and often in very good company. The much-praised The Forgiven Ghost In Me album, released in 2012 under the moniker SCOTT KELLY AND THE ROAD HOME, highlighted the collaborative potential of his solo work, and achieving a rare balance between the intimacy of a solo work and the possibilities afforded by a band effort. Since then, he has frequently played accompanied by THE ROAD HOME, which currently consists of the like-minded cohorts that are fellow NEUROSIS bandmate NOAH LANDIS and "Denver Sound" legend Jay Munly. He has also participated in a few split releases, as well as contributing three songs to the first volume of the Songs Of Townes Van Zandt collection. It is the sum of all these experiences that we will witness at Roadburn when Scott sits down, quietly, with his guitar, and we bet there won't be a dry eye in the room when he bows out at the end.

STEVE VON TILL made us wait a little while for the follow up to his superb 2009 album, A Grave Is A Grim Horse, only giving us three songs on that same Songs Of Townes Van Zandt collection in the meantime to stave off the hunger, but every second of wait was worth it when we finally got to hear A Life Unto Itself. Right now, it still resonates deeply within us as much as it did when it was released last May, if not more so – its sparse and starkly elegant mixture of Americana, ancient folk music and psychedelia constantly leaving us pleasantly lost in some figurative deep dark wood. It has the sobriety, the earthy mysticism, the emotional evocative power and same spiritual connection to nature and to forgotten, ancient times his two first albums did, As The Crow Flies from 2000 and If I Should Fall To The Field from 2002, but it's also brimming with surprising electric subtleties which were first explored on A Grave Is A Grim Horse. If we add to this the fact that, alongside his solo work under his own name, STEVE VON TILL also maintains activity as HARVESTMAN, his home-recorded, psychedelic improvised project which he has released three amazing, mind-altering records with (one of them, Trinity, a very appropriate soundtrack to an Italian horror film), and from which he often performs a few pieces during his solo shows, we can expect a varied, dynamic performance, where the flow of continuity is assured by the man’s unmistakable vocal and guitar personality.

Stream A Life Unto Itself in its entirety RIGHT HERE

A Life Unto Itself ventures into compelling uncharted territory for its maker. Steve Von Till’s weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar provides a foundation, but a much wider variety of sonic textures are presented here. Bold and ambitious arrangements weave vintage synth, sublime strings, percussion, and electric guitars throughout these unique and expansive songs, as Von Till’s raspy whisper dives deeply inward, and speaks genuinely of visions, memories, and self-reflection in a way that feels both seasoned and exposed.

The majority of A Life Unto Itself was captured at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle under the direction of producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Marissa Nadler and Rose Windows), with additional recordings handled at Steve Von Till’s own The Crow’s Nest, and the final product was mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. With guest viola contributions from Eyvind Kang, pedal steel from J. Kardong, and percussion courtesy of Pat Schowe, the album is enshrouded in artwork bearing the recognisable style of Aaron Turner (Sumac, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Hydra Head). All of these factors culminate into a twelve-passage voyage with over forty-five minutes of stirring textures which drill their way immediately to the core of your bones, gnaw your heart’s defense mechanisms to their foundations, and invoke a wellspring of emotions.

A Life Unto Itself LP is out now via Neurot Recordings. Packages for the digital download, CD, and 12” LP on both black and red vinyl, including t-shirt bundles, are AVAILABLE HERE.

A Life Unto Itself ventures into compelling uncharted territory for its maker. STEVE VON TILL's weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar provides a foundation, but a much wider variety of sonic textures are presented here. Bold and ambitious arrangements weave vintage synth, sublime strings, percussion, and electric guitars throughout these unique and expansive songs, as VON TILL's raspy whisper dives deeply inward, and speaks genuinely of visions, memories, and self-reflection in a way that feels both seasoned and exposed.

STEVE VON TILL’s most immense, celestial solo journey yet, A Life Unto Itself was captured at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room,Marissa Nadler and Rose Windows), presenting over forty-five minutes of harrowing textures which drill their way immediately to the core of your bones, gnaw your heart’s defense mechanisms to their foundations, and invoke a wellspring of emotions. In bringing these newest visions to fruition, STEVE VON TILL was joined by viola master Eyvind Kang, pedal steel wizard J. Kardong and percussionist Pat Schowe, and enshrouded by cover art by Aaron Turner (Sumac, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Hydra Head), A Life Unto Itself conjures the man’s most diverse but wholly composed solo creations yet, recalling Harvestman and prior unaccompanied albums under his own name. As Neurosis voyager and solo artist, STEVE VON TILL, prepares to release his new A Life Unto Itself LP through Neurosis’ Neurot Recordings this May, he now presents the gripping  album opener, “In Your Wings.”

The gritty hymn, “In Your Wings,” sees its public debut courtesy of New Noise Magazine, who recently interrogated the multi-instrumentalist on his boldest solo outing yet, the upcoming feature issuing in part, “There are few men in the world who possess a voice so powerful that it instantly sends tidal waves of soul-crushing emotion to the very fiber of your being. As vocalist and guitarist of sludge doom icons Neurosis, STEVE VON TILL’s tortured, colossal howl comes across with the subtlety of a nuclear bomb... VON TILL’s raspy, world-weary timbre holds dominion on his solo projects. He is accompanied primarily by acoustic guitar on his upcoming fourth release A Life Unto Itself, another stunning juxtaposition of beautiful, non-traditional folk music against his powerfully profound delivery.”

A Life Unto Itself ventures into compelling uncharted territory for its maker. Steve Von Till's weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar provides a foundation, but a much wider variety of sonic textures are presented here. Bold and ambitious arrangements weave vintage synth, sublime strings, percussion, and electric guitars in and out of these unique and expansive songs as Steve Von Till's raspy whisper dives deeply inward and speaks genuinely of visions, memories, and self-reflection in a way that feels both seasoned and exposed.

In creating the album’s myriad textures, Von Till was assisted by viola master Eyvind Kang, pedal steel wizard J. Kardong and percussionist Pat Schowe, all under the supervision of engineer and producer Randall Dunn, with whom he recorded and mixed the album at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle. Von Till and his fellow travelers take the listener on a pilgrimage through hidden inner worlds, occasionally surfacing for brief sojourns through the American West (“In Your Wings”), Old World Europe (“A Language of Blood”) and more modern points unknown (“Night of the Moon”).

The songs are informed by a worldview that attempts to peer beyond the veil of the physical world and recognise the symbols and messages that often go unnoticed. “When you make a big life decision and then you hear a raven’s call out in the sky, it wasn’t chance—it was an affirmation, it was meant for you, even if that might seem ridiculous in a conventional sense,”Von Till offers by way of example. “When you hear a melody and it takes you back a thousand years to a memory you’re not even sure you were a part of. When folklore and history become ways of how you see the world, it allows things to become more mystical and take on deeper meaning. When you’re walking through ordinary, mundane situations, you have this frame of reference that takes on great personal significance beyond surviving the day-to-day: It’s surviving the day-to-day with meaning.”

Steve Von Till Reveals Details of an Astonishing New Solo Album, 'A Life Unto Itself,' Upcoming on Neurot Recordings in May

The title doesn't quite say it all, but it says some of it: A Life Unto Itself is as much the name of Steve Von Till's fourth solo album as it is the perfect description for the 25-plus years he's spent forging, with his brothers, the incomparable musical force that is Neurosis—not to mention the numerous sonic tapestries he's woven with Tribes Of Neurot and under his alter ego Harvestman. You can hear that rich musical history, and all the life experience that goes with it, on his new solo album A Life Unto Itself – and this album goes deeper still.

Where Steve Von Till's previous solo recordings took on a more traditional approach with a respectful nod toward American and European folk music, A Life Unto Itself expands and ventures into compelling uncharted territory for its maker.

A Life Unto Itself is a powerful and evocative collection of beautiful Celtic balladry, haunting folk songs, dark psychedelia and expansive Americana, transporting one to the very heart and soul of its creator. If you allow yourself to fully submit to it, abandoning all preconceptions, the rewards can be magnificent.

STEVE VON TILL: Seminal Debut Solo Album Makes Maiden Vinyl Appearance

After resurrecting As The Crow Flies — the seminal debut solo outing from Neurosis’STEVE VON TILL, initially released in 2000, and brought back into print on CD in May of this year — Neurot Recordings is proud to also release the first-ever vinyl edition of the album.

What was the first non-Neurosis recording to see release as part of the Neurot family, this year’s reissue of As The Crow Flies has been unveiled precisely thirteen years after its initial release. Bearing a vast contrast to Neurosis’ massive, plodding riffing and percussion, the album instead feels more like a mental excursion into the outer realms of consciousness; an ambient, eclectic, organic and overall honest harvest from the mind of its creator. Bearing slightly updated artwork and packaging like the CD version, VON TILL’s maiden solo release will now see a proper vinyl pressing, available on deluxe 180-gram wax, in a pressing limited to 500 pieces direct through Neurot only. Both versions are available HERE.

The album is streaming in its entirety at Decibel Magazine joined by some insight on the inception and lifespan of the LP’s seven songs by their creator. Listen to all of As The Crow Flies and more RIGHT HERE.

STEVE VON TILL: Debut Solo Album To See First-Ever Vinyl Pressing; CD Back In Print And Available Now

As the out-of-print debut solo album from Neurosis’ STEVE VON TILL, As The Crow Flies, sees a long-awaited re-release this month, Neurot Recordings proudly confirms the seminal album’s first-ever vinyl edition.

Initially released in 2000, marking the first non-Neurosis recording on the Neurot roster, STEVE VON TILL’s As The Crow Flies is now available on CD once again, as the label this week re-releases the album into the population precisely thirteen years later. Bearing updated artwork and packaging from the initial release, the nearly forty-five minute composition bears a vast contrast to Neurosis’ massive, plodding riffing and percussion, instead feeling more like a mental excursion into the outer realms of consciousness; an ambient, eclectic, organic and overall honest harvest from the mind of its creator.

Neurot this week also announces the pending first-ever LP edition of As The Crow Flies, now slated to land late this Summer. This deluxe 180-gram vinyl pressing of the album will be limited to 500 pieces and will be available direct through Neurot Recordings only. An official late Summer release date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Steve Von Till's Debut Solo Album, 'As The Crow Flies'

For thirteen years now, the Neurot Recordings family has not only survived, but has thrived, especially in recent years, the label’s flourishing roster of forward-thinking artists constantly expanding. Amidst releases from internationally-renowned acts Ufomammut, Isis, Shrinebuilder and of course Neurosis, the clan has also aided in exposing impressive acts from the more underground corners of the scene including Across Tundras, US Christmas, Ides of Gemini, Oxbow, A Storm of Light, Amenra and others. Along the way the members of Neurosis, founders of Neurot, have also spawned an incredible lineage of solo recordings, performances, and joint collaborations amongst themselves and with a close-knit band of other dedicated artists.

Marking the origin of Neurot Recordings was one seminal release which has remained out-of-print for years, but As The Crow Flies -- the debut solo recording from Neurosis’ STEVE VON TILL — will soar once again this Spring, as the label prepares a reissue of this seminal outing. This nearly forty-five minute composition bore a vast contrast to Neurosis’ massive, plodding riffing and percussion, instead feeling more like a mental excursion into the outer realms of consciousness; an ambient, eclectic, organic and overall honest harvest from the mind of its creator.

Bearing updated artwork and packaging, Neurot will unveil a 2013 reissue of As The Crow Flies in Europe on May 13th and in North American on May14th, precisely thirteen years since its initial release.

As The Crow Flies Track Listing:

1. Stained Glass
2. We All Fall
3. Remember
4. Warning of a Storm
5. Twice Born
6. Midheaven
7. Shadows in Stone
