AMENRA ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF MASS VI INCOMING ON NEUROT RECORDINGS THIS OCTOBER; RECORD RELEASE SHOW ALSO REVEALED

Contrasts have always been deep, and at the very heart of AMENRA's music, ever since they started uttering their Prayers and holding their Masses, almost 18 years ago. Tormented darkness has always coexisted alongside luminous beauty, thunderous impacts instantly followed by frail, delicate subtleties. Songs that seem to engulf everyone in the world at once suddenly feel like they are being whispered to you inside the isolation of your solitary womb. The time that we have waited for a new Mass, this Mass VI that is now finally materialized and ready to consume and be consumed, seems itself to also be a double-edged sword – on one hand, and although Nowena | 9.10,Mass V's closer, seems as final as anything we've ever heard, like something that should be playing when the world itself comes to an end, we are parched all the same for new AMENRA songs to enter our life and remain there as the others from the past have done, and continue to do during the band's impassioned live performances.

On the other hand, the wounds inflicted by Mass V still have not turned to scars, they still itch and they have been made wider by the ways the band has found to interpret their material in different ways in the last few years, from acoustic performances and recordings to several collaborations with like-minded artists, there hasn't been any kind of absence or withdrawal.

In any case, ready or not, Mass VI is here, and more than any other album in AMENRA's past, it highlights those contrasts in a deeply affecting way. Mass VI shall arrive on 20th October through Neurot Recordings, read on for further details...

As always with AMENRA, this art has come directly from the souls of the musicians involved, they are capable of establishing connections with their listeners more profound than almost any other band because they are direct heart to heart connections. Thus, this pain, this sorrow, and also these fleeting moments of joy, they come from those hearts. They are all too real.

"It took us a couple of years as always to find the right mindset to write an new album. Works of music whose creation was fuelled by pure necessity," Colin van Eeckhout explains. "We needed to write, at this point. Finding inspiration in depression, sorrow and despair. Levy found himself in a dark place for some time, where he shut himself off from everyone to write new music. It was the first Mass album he helped writing, and his being is felt throughout the entire album. Lebon, our drummer, celebrated the birth of his newborn son. We were all saddened by Mathieu's father's cancer and are mourning the loss of Lebon's beloved mother. And for me, personally, my firstborn son had a tumor removed from inside his head. It seriously shook my ground. Fate strikes and strokes. Where there is Love there is Pain."

No love without pain. No life without death. No light without darkness. That is the conflict at the heart of Mass VI, at the heart of each and every one of us, at the heart of what it means to be human, to live and to love and to lose, and few other pieces of music will wrench that ambivalence out of us and present it in such an acutely overwhelming fashion.

It's hard to think of a better person to capture this sonic enormity than Billy Anderson. The legendary American producer was already the chosen one for Mass V, and between Neurosis' Through Silver In Blood, Sleep's Dopesmoker, Eyehategod's Dopesick, Cathedral's Endtyme or Brutal Truth's Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom, among many, many others, he's been a decisive element in the building of many a true classic. Mass VI was recorded in the Belgian Ardennes, a region of thick forests in the south-east of the country, where the band was snowed in for a week.

Below you'll find some imagery of the inner artwork of the record created by the wonderful Stephan Vanfleteren (who also took the band photos) we'll be sharing the official cover art along with further album details and pre-orders soon.

Surrounding the release of Fires Within Fires, Decibel Magazine published an entire issue dedicated to NEUROSIS, including multiple rare Hall Of Fame features as well as a full feature on the new album, a very brief section of the coverage praising, “NEUROSIS have redefined what heavy meant and what heavy could be, all while refusing to define themselves as anything more than conduits for the music they conjure like diviners. Now releasing their eleventh LP, Fires Within Fires, they’ve ascended from the trappings of youth to alter the landscape of heavy music like the violent shift of tectonic plates.” Rolling Stone published a massive feature on the band, including in part, “Outside of booking tours and scheduling press, the group has existed as a DIY operation for the better part of the last two decades, sort of like metal's equivalent to Fugazi or Black Flag. Everything about NEUROSIS, from their extended drum etudes to the Pink Floyd–like visuals they hauled on the road with them for years, has been about bowing to their own artistic whims… Fires Within Fires, showcases the best aspects of the NEUROSIS experience: downtuned Sabbath-influenced riffs, pounding tribal drumming, fleeting moments of elegance and caustic vocals recounting personal apocalypses.”

AMENRA INVITED TO PERFORM AT ROADBURN BY CURATOR JOHN DYER BAIZLEY

Roadburn Festival 2017 curator, John Dyer Baizley, announces that AMENRA will perform a set at this year's festival.

Roadburn and the Church of Ra are certainly no strangers; and there's no doubt they’ve left an impression on the wider music community.

“As I round out the lineup for my curated stages at the upcoming Roadburn Festival 2017, I’m again thrilled to announce one of the last acts I’ve booked: the uncontested visionary of monochromatic heaviness, AMENRA. The last time I witnessed an AMENRA performance was at Roadburn 2013, when they could still fit (barely) inside Het Patronaat. The line out the door was hundreds of show-goers long, and I was somehow able to force my way inside to see the band perform. To say they blew us all away would be a grossly undersold miscalculation. They set a new standard for me that afternoon, demonstrating just how forward-thinking and discovery-rich DIY music can be; a transcendent marriage of heaviness, artistry, non-linearity, energy, and soul which vaulted from AMENRA’s stage and through the audience.

“It is with the greatest pleasure that I announce their 2017 performance will be the first “heavy” set they've done in quite some time. They were at the top of my list of invitees when I was first asked to curate, and I wouldn't skip their 013 set for any rational reason. They are the penultimate Roadburn band; they’re a modern band, they defy categorization, and they are single-minded in their commitment to an unwavering artistic vision of beautiful cacophony. If this music could take physical form, it would render mountains to dust. Those faint of heart attendees beware, this is music that leaves a trace. I’ll see you all there.”

AMENRA have recently completed work on their upcoming album Mass VI, which will be released later on in the year via Neurot Recordings. To tide you over until Mass VI surfaces, the ever prolific creative forces behind AMENRA have teamed up with fellow Ghent musicians, Raketkanon to create AMENRA X RAKETKANON X MICHAËL BORREMANS — a split 10” released in May via Consouling Sounds.

Colin Van Eeckhout will present a short documentary filmed throughout 2016, entitled Noisey Meets: Colin Van Eeckhout as part of Roadburn Cinema. Directed by Duco Coops for Vice/Noisey this short documentary follows AMENRA’s frontman at various points throughout 2016.

Colin comments: “I wanted to put emphasis on the human aspect of being a musician; everybody always pictures us living in cellars drinking blood from skulls, but there’s more to our lives than that. You see my mom, my kids, my work, rehearsal space, some spots where it all began for AMENRA in the skatepark...you see what its really like behind the scenes. The free moments we have in our lives we dedicate it all to art, creation and music. We want to give form to that world inside our heads.”

AMENRA will perform on the main stage at the 013 venue, as part of John Dyer Baizley’s curation, on Friday, April 21, 2017. Meanwhile check out remaining dates below for previously announced shows...

CHURCH OF RA’S COLLECTION EXPANDS: AMENRA ALIVE ACOUSTIC TOUR ON THE HORIZON AND SIDE PROJECT NEWS

(Poster design by Valentijn Goethals/ Tomas Lootens/Fraiskette Art by Aline Gorsen)

Following the release of Alive - AMENRA’s live acoustic album recorded at Ancienne Belgique (Brussels, BE) - the band will, for the first time, dedicate a full tour to their acoustic sounds by wandering these breathtakingly solemn sonic invocations across Europe during February 2017.

Entirely stripped back from their electric mass, these shows offer AMENRA at their most vulnerable yet an overwhelming sense of beauty, dark tranquillity and mindful rest blooms in their acoustic congregations, as those who have already witnessed shall attest to. The first round of dates are listed below, having experienced this at Roadburn earlier this year, we implore you to join AMENRA on these occasions:

AMENRA ALIVE ACOUSTIC DATES 2017
17/02 - Oberhausen DE, Drucklufthaus
18/02 - Berlin DE, Lido
19/02 - Gdansk PL, B90
20/02 - Warsaw PL, Progresja
21/02 - Wroclaw PL, Firlej
22/02 - Prague CZ, Futurum
23/02 - Innsbruck AU, PMK
24/02 - Milan IT, Santeria Social Club
25/02 - Lausanne CH, Les Docks
26/02 - Karlsruhe DE, Jubez
17/03 - Leeuwarden NL, Neushoorn
18/03 - Eindhoven NL, Effenaar
19/03 - Utrecht NL, Tivoli

Alive was initially released in April at Roadburn Festival 2016, where the band adorned the Tilburg masses with an acoustic set of which you can now watch in its entirety. The release also comes seven years since AMENRA’s first acoustic release – 2009’s Afterlife EP. A counterpoint to the band's Mass series, Alive features brand new compositions and cover songs, as well as appearances from special guests and additional musicians. Mastered by Frederic Alstadt, AMENRA show that heaviness and darkness does not always require significant amplification but can be found in our own mindfulness, reflectiveness and an honesty to the self.

In addition to the full Roadburn acoustic set linked above, you can further get a taste of AMENRA’s acoustic guidance with the video for the stripped version of Mass IIII’s ‘Razoreater’, an eight-minute insight into a 2015 acoustic show at Saint-Jean Church (Fribourg, CH) and a cover of Flemish folk artist’s Zjef Vanuytsel’s “Het Dorp”.

AMENRA are ever prolific, expanding their sonics into the collective that is the Church of Ra. Outside of AMENRA itself, vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout has a new live solo release, 10910, incoming November 11th with pre-orders going live on October 3rd via Consouling Sounds. Inspired by his latest studio release, RASA, CHVE found these tracks manifested organically and distinctively once on stage. 10910 was recorded in one take during a busy Saturday afternoon in Ghent (BE), immediately being cut to vinyl afterwards. Mixed by Aaron Harris (ISIS, Palms etc.), mastered by Frederik Dejongh (CHVE, The Black Heart Rebellion, Syndrome, etc.) and the visual art direction comes from a collaboration between CHVE and Tine Guns. You can catch CHVE live during November, will the full list of dates being found at CHVE’s official Facebook page.

Guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove has also recently released a new LP under his solo moniker Syndrome, entitled Forever and A Day aptly following his 2012 release Now and Forever (both via Consouling Sounds). His instrumental, intricate and introspective journey continues with this new release, consisting again of one song that taps in meditative yet dark drones, ambience and melody. Syndrome shall lend support to a handful of dates on the November Alcest/Mono European tour in addition to solo shows, with a full list at his official Facebook page.

Fellow guitarist Lennart Bossu has further seen a new record break dawn of day with the hardcore/black metal crossover outfit Oathbreaker. The highly anticipated Rheia is enticingly unique and takes a great leap forward for the quartet with its concoction of seething sonic twistings, melodic hummings and impenetrable atmospheres, out now via Deathwish Inc. The band are currently supporting Skeleton Witch across the US whilst the Rheia release tour travels across Europe this November/December with Wife in support – all dates can be found at the Deathwish Inc. website.

For a more detailed round up of all this news, please check out the links below, and enjoy the bounty that these talented musicians bring, time and time again...

AMENRA Scheduled For Two Performances At Roadburn 2016; Additional Tour Dates And More Announced

Belgian entity AMENRA will take part in the upcoming installment of the world renowned Roadburn Festival, having this week been confirmed to perform two times at the 2016 event. With a sonic arsenal behind them that covers a broad spectrum of emotive intricacies AMENRA is perfectly placed to showcase their diversity at Roadburn 2016. The band will be playing an acoustic set, with an expanded band of musicians, immediately before Neurosis, on the Saturday, and again will take to the main stage on Sunday night to play an electric set.

(above photograph by Stefaan Temmerman)                                         (above artwork by Fortifem.fr)

AMENRA is renowned for the intensity of their live performances; often brooding, always evocative. Over the course of five full-length albums, and numerous split releases, the band has carved itself a nook in the affections of fans over the past twelve years. Their rhythmic, even tribal, and nihilistic bludgeoning interspersed with delicate twists has cemented the outfit as a firm favorite with open-minded fans of sludge, doom, drone and everything in between.

In 2009 when the band recorded an acoustic EP, entitled Afterlife, and played select shows with this material, they retained their unique atmospherics, but introduced a lighter yet still deeply personal element to their output. AMENRA mastermind Colin H. Van Eeckhout explains the motivation behind the EP as “borne out of the idea that we wanted to be able to counsel, speak to and guide our (grand) children long after we are gone.”

The performances at Roadburn are currently the only planned live outings for AMENRA in 2016, as they intend to dedicate much of the year to simultaneously writing both a second acoustic offering -- this time a full-length release -- as well as their upcoming LP, Mass VI, the follow-up to their latest album, 2012’s Neurot Recordings-released, Mass V.

The band is also scheduled to perform at a series of European dates this Fall, including a date at Amplifest in Portugal, with additional shows in France and the UK confirmed. A band like no other, the sounds of AMENRA are raw, honest and sincere, which often provides a helpful guide to listeners when facing the tribulations of life. With that being said, their live presence is simultaneously visceral yet ethereal, crushing yet cathartic, making these dates not to be missed.

AMENRA tour dates:
SUN 20/09: AMPLIFEST, PORTO PO
THU 1/10: DIVAN DU MONDE, PARIS FR
FRI 2/10: L'ASTROLABE, ORLEANS FR
FRI 6/11: BODEGA SOCIAL CLUB, NOTTINGHAM UK
SAT 7/11: DAMNATION FEST, LEEDS UK
SUN 8/11: HEAVEN, LONDON UK
SAT 16/04: ROADBURN FESTVAL, TILBURG NL
SAT 17/04: ROADBURN FESTVAL, TILBURG NL

In addition to writing the mentioned upcoming albums, AMENRA is also working on film scores and music for theatre and contemporary dance performances, while outside of the band itself, the members further immerse themselves within various sonic endeavors including Oathbreaker, Hessian, The Black Heart Rebellion, Harlowe, CHVE and more, in addition to continually creating new artwork and visuals to accompany their musical output. Stand by for further announcements in the coming months.

AMENRA Collaborates With Willy Vanderperre For Humbling Video; European Tour Nears

Neurot Recordings act, AMENRA, has just released a stunningly personal thirteen-minute-long video for their epic track, “À Mon Âme.”

AMENRA teamed up with top fashion photographer, Willy Vanderperre, and director of photography, Nicolas Karakatsanis, the visual masterminds behind the reins of a video which features the band stripped of all but their own selves. Vanderperre has worked with a startling array of individuals, from Kate Moss to Kanye West, but his encounter with AMENRA sees both parties break formation to form a hesitant, powerful and revealing union. The video, set to “À Mon Âme,” from their most recent LP, Mass V, may not be what you have come to expect from the cult crafters of discordance, but what are AMENRA if not masters of defying expectation?

Sink into “À Mon Âme” via Nowness AT THIS LOCATION.

Says AMENRA’s CHVE of the collaboration; ”It is not at all like the sort of visuals we usually present; it is more a case study, or a visual interpretation of the band, a little piece of concept art, if you will. The idea they [Willy Vanderperre and director of photography Nicolas Karakatsanis] had was stripping us of everything we had – ‘what if we took it all away from them?’, ‘what if we took them from their comfort zone?’. No shadows or darkness to hide in, dark imagery, props or metaphors or symbols to use.”

He continues…”Compare it to what we sometimes or mostly do with our music – stick to the mere necessary, take a minimalistic approach of a whole. What do we really need? To create a certain ‘feeling’ of emotion. For us, it was an extremely interesting cooperation. We normally keep our guard extremely high, never give something out of our hands, to keep it as close to our skin as humanly possible – that’s exactly what they did as well, literally…It was awkward, uneasy, and very confronting for us to see, yet one of the most interesting things we did lately, and an honor for us to be working with such talented and inspiring people. ‘Under a watchtower of punishing light.’”

AMENRA will be hitting the road again, beginning next month and including plenty of festivals; including Bristol’s Temples and London’s Beyond the Redshift festivals in the UK. Watch the trailer for the Church of Ra European tour here. Mass V can be ordered at THIS LOCATION.

AMENRA is also gearing up for two split releases on Consouling Sound, due for release this Summer. Each album will present an incarnation of the band, together with a sometimes surprising, but always compelling counterpart band. For a split 10″ album with Eleanora, AMENRA is offering “À mon Âme (live)” and for a split 10″ album with Treha Sektori, AMENRA decided to re-interpret “À mon Âme” and create an atmospheric ambient piece called “Trahn.” Additionally, My Proud Mountain is gearing up to release Live II — AMENRA’s second live CD and first live 2xLP — featuring live audio from their Mass V release show last year, mixed and mastered by Billy Anderson.

More news from AMENRA shall emerge in the coming months so do stay tuned.

“The band’s focus on the inherent and desolate beauty that’s found in life imbued with a painful ambience not often found within their doomed sludge style…in the clashing of tender and serene passages with intense screams and walls of noise that touch upon the actuality of life. It will hurt and terrify, but there can be salvation. 9/10″ – Metal Hammer

“Ethereal hardcore/sludge band Amenra touches on black metal, gothic folk and post-rock in the most organic of ways.” – BrooklynVegan

“The dynamics of Mass V are simply staggering.” – Rock A Rolla

“An elephantine beast of a record, whose greyness of hue is matched by its thunderous assault…Mass V portrays a band with grim gravitas that’s all their own.” – Terrorizer

“On Mass V to say they’ve surpassed themselves is an understatement. Thanks in no small part to the anguished squalls of Colin Van Eekhout’s vocals there is a truly uncomfortable and palpable sense of fear and distress, like being forced into the ominous blackness that adorns the album’s cover.” – The Quietus

“…an insurmountable peak of despair, and amongst the horror, enlightenment. Mass V was the sound of this tribe of Neurot finally marching defiantly beside those who have journeyed through silver in blood before them.” – PopMatters

“…an utterly brilliant album that not only stands as Amenra’s finest work, but that undoubtedly would (and probably does) make Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, and Co. proud to have these fine young Belgians on their roster. 5/5″ – Sputnik Music

“…a dynamically powerful return-to-form.” – Ultimate Guitar

Set to commence January 2nd in Seattle, CORRECTIONS HOUSE will pillage their way through Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, leaving souls in torment and stages in ruins.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE are currently touring in support of their Last City Zerodebut, issued via Neurot Recordings in late October. Produced by Parker at Electrical Audio, Soma Studios, 60 Psycho Hum and Nodferatu’s Lair, Last City Zero is an audio product of societal ruin and psychological decay. At once beautifully hideous, graceful and terrifying, the record travels far beyond the confines of any one specific genre and continues to reap the applause of exploratory fans and critics globally. In a perfect 10/10 review of the offering, Crave boasts, “CORRECTIONS HOUSE have created something wholly original, incredibly touching, and most likely alienating. Bravo gentlemen, bravo.” In a 9/10 score, Exclaim! agrees, “Featuring dark, depressing atmospheres and exceptionally negative, apocalyptic vibes, Last City Zero is brooding, raw and corrosive, as well as breathtakingly beautiful.” The Sleeping Shaman notes, “The coming together of CORRECTIONS HOUSE seems like one of those moments where the protagonists caught lightning in a bottle, a project designed to explore the diseased, dark underbelly of the American Dream, like the soundtrack to a David Lynch film… It’s not perfect — at times it is ugly and raw — but it is something special and a captivating project delivered with complete conviction by its cast of players,” while About.com adds, “On Last City Zero,CORRECTIONS HOUSE survey the world with a bleak outlook, as much with scorn as sadness. The industrial/mechanical side feels indicative of how the soul is being ripped from the chest of society, whereas the cleaner side represents the need to hold on to our own individuality. The angry screams voice the fight to maintain what is ours and to retake what has been taken, and the spoken voices of reason and honesty instill reflectiveness and a lack of ignorance…”

In related news, CORRECTIONS HOUSE recently premiere a video for the track “Bullets And Graves,” upon unsuspecting masses via MTV Hive. Directed by Brian Sowell, “Bullets And Graves” is a flagrantly violent, roadside nightmare dominated by shady characters, vicious beatdowns and nameless destinations. Shot completely in black and white, the production is as captivating as it is disconcerting. Check out it out below.

AMENRA Post New Video Via BrooklynVegan

As the worldwide release of their Neurot Recordings debut Mass V nears release at the end of this month, today Belgium’s ethereal sludge spiritualists AMENRA release a brand new official video from the anticipated opus.

The video for “Nowena I 9.10” was filmed using stop-motion animation created by Stef Cuypers and edited by Stef Cuypers and AMENRA guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove. “Nowena I 9.10” is the third and possibly most tension-filled song found on Mass V, the epic six-minute anthem also featuring guest vocals by Neurosis’ Scott Kelly.

View “Nowena I 9.10” for the first time via BrooklynVegan, posted alongside the other previously-released tracks from Mass V and more AMENRA action AT THIS LOCATION.

“Nowena I 9.10” lyrics:

the darkest hours will seem long
they will feel like for ever
then new light breaks into dawn

novena burns for my brothers at night
a flame that burns the bodies of light

brothers burn. I see the fire in their eyes.

the past is your now
the present now passed

now is the time

(everything awaits you and the light will let you)

After stealing the show at Damnation Festival in Leeds this past weekend, AMENRAare firmly focused on the release of their new studio album Mass V which will see the cold light of day later this month on November 27th via Neurot Recordings.

“Boden” lyrics:
carry within
a fear
that blossoms on skin
forever alone
sorrow says
bury my bones
carry within
regret
for everything
tear old pain away
I renounce this day and
I renounce every wound
made in my flesh
made by my flesh
are you awake? what did you see?
I’m a sudden hissing,
right behind your ear.
a white noise
but it’s quiet now
I am reason
I am fear
inflict.
I call out
and you fear me
I call out
and all the brothers in the world they hear me
but the pain remains the same

Since their 1999 inception, AMENRA have infiltrated underground music communities with their grand style of organic sludge/doom metal through a plethora of LPs, EPs, and splits with Hessian, TBHR, Oathbreaker and others, through a variety of independent labels including Anvil Of Fury, Sound Devastation, Hypertension and their own Church of Ra imprint. Intense touring and festival appearances across Europe and beyond helped these diverse recordings transform into the live setting, captivating visual effects always an imperative element of the band’s on-stage dominance.

Neurot announced AMENRA’s induction into their clan in July of 2011, which was followed directly by the band’s second European tour in support of the mighty Neurosis, the bond between both parties strengthening. Last November the members of AMENRA wandered through the countries neighboring Belgium in search of the perfect inspiration for their next studio opus. The journey led them to the village of Wissant in North France, where upon discovering vast lands still decimated by and littered with carnage from World War II battles invoked the proper stimulation the band needed to create Mass V.

In May the band entered the expansive La Chapelle Studio to create Mass V,assisted by engineer Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Neurosis, Melvins, Sleep, Swans, etc.) to bring their sonic attack to its most crushing. With possibly their most inspired material to date in hand, brandishing forty minutes of material through four movements, they utilized the photography of Stefaan Temmerman and the talents of Webecameaware for the layout, AMENRA completed their vision and are preparing for the world to hear this sonic tour de force.

one day I awoke
and I saw
the world. that comes from us

dearborn. I will remain. world.
and death comes from my ashes.

we were called upon
and awaited a sign
there was a fire divine

remember us
and you will remain
we all fell
and overcame

bereaved
this is our soil
remember it
and it will remain
dearborn
when ashes reign
remember us
we were the flame

now when will I be wounded enough?
