NEUROSIS To Reissue Out-Of-Print Second Album The Word As Law In August

NEUROSIS will reissue the band’s second LP, The Word As Law, in August, the album having remained out-of-print since the 1990s.

While listening to NEUROSIS’ discography in chronological order, their sound gradually shifts in a very steady and somewhat seamless progression with each record, though their first few albums are undoubtedly cut from their 80s punk influences and surroundings. The Word As Law was initially released on vinyl only in 1990 through Lookout! Records, alongside the likes of Operation Ivy, Green Day, Screeching Weasel and other Bay Area punk acts of the time. Upbeat rhythms and enraged vocals fuel The Word As Law, the record picking up where their Pain Of Mind debut’s ripping punk sound left off, while the band simultaneously began experimenting with more dissonant, melancholic, and demoralizing tones that would carve the foundation for their next few albums and their signature sound.

NEUROSIS had yet to infuse keyboards or synthesizers into the mix when The Word As Law was recorded by Mark Lemaire at Sound & Vision in San Francisco of December 1989. The blend of vocals delivered by guitarist Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson, and new inductee on this album, guitarist Steve Von Till, driven by the powerful rhythms of drummer Jason Roeder, coalesce to formulate an eerie and original sound on The Word As Law, which results in the album’s cult status as an incredibly groundbreaking album for countless crust punk, hardcore, and experimental metal artists worldwide.

While prior reissues of the album featured several re-recorded bonus tracks from the band’s prior singles and releases, the 2017 Neurot reissue of The Word As Law will bear the album’s initial eight tracks, all completely remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering. Additionally, the album’s cover artwork has been reworked and modernized by NEUROSIS’ former live visual architect Josh Graham to match the label’s previously-reissued Souls At Zero, Enemy Of The Sun, and other titles.

NEUROSIS’ own Neurot Recordings will reissue The Word As Law on CD, LP, and digital formats on August 25th, directly following their US tour with Converge and Amenra and their performance at Psycho Las Vegas.

See all confirmed tour dates below and find preorder links for The Word As Law at THIS LOCATION.

The Word As Law Track Listing:

1. Double Edged Sword

2. The Choice

3. Obsequious Obsolescence

4. To What End?

5. Tomorrow's Reality

6. Common Inconsistencies

7. Insensitivity

8. Blisters

I still remember the first time I heard The Word As Law, shortly after it was released in 1990. From the first chords of “Double-Edged Sword” I was hooked – the sounds seemed to send some sort of powerful electrical current coursing through my body – and by the time the feedback faded out at the end of “Blisters” I was emotionally spent. I had never heard anything like it: The Word As Law completely changed my understanding of three different musical genres – punk, hardcore, and metal.

The record blends elements of all three. There is the raw moodiness of punk. The ferocity and anger of hardcore. The musicianship and dynamics of metal. But The Word As Law transcends all those labels, in the process creating something utterly unique.

It hit me on so many levels. It spoke to the anger I had as a young punk, my sense that I was trapped in a dog-eat-dog world of relentless capitalist competition, my alienation from the broader society. But it also resonated on a deeper level. My father killed himself when I was a teenager, leaving me mourning, feeling as if I were surrounded by a thick fog of despair. The Word As Law is not a happy collection of songs, but it played this incredibly positive and cathartic role in my life. Listening to it over and over, gave me an odd sense of comfort. I realized that I wasn’t the only person struggling with deep emotional turmoil and found myself slowly working through the anger and grief that had enveloped me.

More than twenty-five years later they are still my favorite band. And I still try to attend every NEUROSIS show I can.

The Word As Law was a massive influence on an entire generation of bands including my own, Econochrist. It’s the bridge to what NEUROSIS would become in later years. So, put it back on your turntable. Step to the front the falling is today. -- Ben Sizemore/Econochrist

HARVESTMAN: Music For Megaliths By Neurosis’ Steve Von Till Streaming At Noisey; Album To See Release Next Week Through Neurot Recordings

Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till will release Music For Megaliths -- the anxiously-anticipated fourth album under the banner of his solo outfit, HARVESTMAN -- next week through Neurot Recordings. Advancing the album’s public release, Noisey is hosting an early listen to the exploratory album in its lush entirety.

“Neurosis singer/guitarist Steve Von Till makes music with his main band that more or less sounds like one of these boulders slowly colliding with your head, but his solo work under his own name and as the drone project HARVESTMAN provides a more placid kind of heaviness, as the new HARVESTMAN album Music For Megaliths demonstrates,” Noisey offers in part. “The album is a great example of the ever-bountiful intersection between heavy metal and experimental music, feeling like the former without ever exploding into pounding riffs and drums.”

Explore HARVESTMAN’s vast Music For Megaliths at Noisey RIGHT HERE.

As with prior HARVESTMAN and other solo releases by Steve Von Till, Music For Megaliths sees the artist handling a wide array of instruments and approaches, including vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, synthesizers, hurdy gurdy, effects, and more, fully performed, recorded, and mixed at his own The Crow’s Nest in Northern Idaho. Neurosis’ Jason Roeder provides drums to the track “Levitation,” and the album’s exploratory, mood-altering, spiritual atmospheres were mastered by James Plotkin, and the album was completed with artwork by Thomas Hooper.

Neurot Recordings will release HARVESTMAN‘s Music For Megaliths on CD, LP, and digital formats next Friday, May 19th; preorders and bundles are available at the Neurot webstore HERE.

"Ruins, monuments, and ancient sites of worship are multi-sensory experiences – at once residues of the sacred, the parchment on which the passage of time has been inscribed and templates for imaginative reconstruction, spaces in which to invest and immerse, to trade your bearings for an inexhaustible state of transition.

Over the course of three albums, Steve Von Till has, under the guise of HARVESTMAN, provided the sonic analogue, casting his net for what might have been and yet still be. Both a personal meditation and a tuning fork for the most ancient and enduring of resonances, his latest album, Music For Megaliths, further expands his journeys along the sonic ley lines that run between folk, drone, psychedelia, the “kosmische” outposts of krautrock and noise: not as an act of eclecticism, but of divination, giving voice to an underlying continuity that binds them all.

Recorded over a period of several years in the dawn hours of creation, Music For Megaliths is an aggregation of moments and recordings that have allowed themselves to spell out a greater whole. Utilizing repetition, manipulation, and modulation, it’s a hallowed frequency dial that ranges across the pulse-regulated drone of “The Forest Is Our Temple,” revving up like a generator powered by arcane currents, the blissful gaze of “Ring Of Sentinels,” “Sundown”’s ominous waves of interference and “White Horse”’s rite of dissolution and regeneration, nomadic and devout. Music For Megaliths is a crossing over, whose multiple routes are testament to a singular and sensuously dilated vision." – words by Jonathan Selzer, 2017

NEUROSIS SHARE SOUNDS FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING ALBUM, FIRES WITHIN FIRES VIA VIDEO TEASER, PLUS PRE-ORDERS NOW ACTIVE

On September 23rd, NEUROSIS take a dominant leap with their eleventh full-length, Fires Within Fires. Three decades in the making, and following 2012's Honor Found In Decay, the album is a testament both to the history and future of NEUROSIS. In true Ouroborean style, Fires Within Fires gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Striking the band's signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, dense sonic heaviness and reflective space. Fires Within Fires is succinct, raw and deeply soulful, an all-encompassing reminder to all that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength. Our first and only glimpse of the music on this record, prior to release date, is sampled in a new video which has emerged, here you can also marvel at the exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper...

KOWLOON WALLED CITY Streams Grievances Title Track Via Decibel

“Arm to arm they burned., with nothing to bear, you learned. No love, no burden, no memory.” – “Grievances,” KOWLOON WALLED CITY

Today, Decibel Magazine is streaming the title track from Grievances, the new full-length from San Francisco’s KOWLOON WALLED CITY. Grievances will be released worldwide October 9, 2015 on Neurot Recordings, with vinyl on Gilead Media. Preorder bundles are available at THIS LOCATION.

Shifting even further from their sludgy post-hardcore roots towards a sparser, more melancholic heaviness, on the seven-track Grievances, strings rattle, guitars crackle and blister, notes ring out, at turns bleak and beautiful – sometimes both at once. Recorded and mixed by vocalist Scott Evans at Sharkbite Studios and his own Antisleep Audio, both in Oakland, the recording is honest and spacious, and intense without artifice or studio trickery.

From an advance review in the UK’s The List: “Purely sonically, this is a stunning record – big, clean guitars, used as knives, not hammers, over a vicious bass bite and drums that hang and resound, full of anticipation, tension and release. And the vocals are one of KOWLOON’s main weapons – where others in this milieu go for the guttural growl or the manly roar, Scott Evans’ anguished howl is purer, softer, full of sorrow and frustration dredged up from the belly … Compositionally, it’s incredibly smart but unflashy. At first, it appears simple and straightforward, but the arrangements are deceptively complex and wilfully elusive, focusing on elision and clashing sour chords. A key strategy finds the band building from an austere beginning to a colossal, climactic riff that repeats and repeats.”

Evans says, “The song ‘Grievances’ started with the investment bankers who threw a cocktail party overlooking an Occupy protest, and ended up at a 1911 shirt factory fire where dozens of employees died because the owners had locked the exits and stairwells. The album cover is related in some ways—look up Lewis Hine's photography from the early 1900s.”

Following the release of GrievancesKOWLOON WALLED CITY will join Fight Amp for a short West Coast tour. The tour begins at the Day Of Shred Fest in Santa Ana and wraps up with a hometown record release show in Oakland.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE: “White Man’s Gonna Lose” From Impending New Studio Offering Now Playing At Revolver; Know How To Carry A Whip Preorders Available

Know How To Carry A Whip is the imminent new studio endeavor from industrialized volume abusers, CORRECTIONS HOUSE. A nine-track, forty-five-minute exercise is sonic indecency, the record was captured by the band’s own Sanford Parker (Buried At Sea) alongside recently institutionalized minister of propaganda, Seward Fairbury, in a subterranean bunker complex in Vietnam.

Deeper, darker, and far more fluid than 2013’s critically lauded Last City Zero debut, Know How To Carry A Whip is unapologetic in its audio trauma. Featuring a guest appearance by Negative Soldier, the record finds CORRECTIONS HOUSE -- Parker, Fairbury, Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) and Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod) -- at their most arduous. Immersed in experiences of longing and loneliness from the depths of their collectively putrefying hearts, each movement contained within Know How To Carry A Whip discloses a new, disconcerting air of danger, paranoia and looming defeat marked by an inexplicable sense of catharsis

Suffocating yet stimulating, oft static sodden, discordant and tribal, all twined around Williams’ unassailable manic street preacher verses and intermittently juxtaposed by the smooth, cradling sounds of Lamont’s lingering saxophone, Know How To Carry A Whip remains rhythmic and hypnotic throughout, with grooves that dominate and penetrate.

In advance of its release, today Revolver undrapes the impulsive deviance and decadence of third movement, “White Man’s Gonna Lose,” now streaming at THIS LOCATION.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE methodically creates and destroys through audio infection and transcendent musical deconstruction. All things in all ways. There is nothing else. Know How To Carry A Whip will be released worldwide on October 23rd, 2015 via Neurot Recordings. Preorders for CD, LP, Digital & T-Shirt bundles are available at the Neurot Webstore

Dark Buddha Rising Offer the Second Audio Excerpt from their Upcoming Album Inversum; Preorders Now Live

Dark Buddha Rising have shared the second audio excerpt "E X O" from their upcoming fifth album, Inversum (Neurot Recordings) - a two-track exercise in the black arts of psychedelia. About this second offering, the band comment..."E X O is the cosmic process of Inversum, a universal collapse into the singularity of existence."

_____________________________________________________
LISTEN TO EXPANSIVE SOUNDS OF E X O

_____________________________________________________

Inversum ingests its listeners whole into a tense, menacing realm of dark atmospheres, harrowing mysticism, tormented howls and slow, treacherous riff rumblings.

Regarded as the opening of the Third Cycle Of Dark Buddha Rising, Inversum was recorded, produced and mixed by the band in the bowels of the Wastement, the self-proclaimed “asylum of eternal feedback,” and welcomes the addition of new Dark Buddha Rising recruits, V. Vatanen (guitar, vocals), J. Saarivuori (keyboards) and M. Neuman (vocals).

As the dust of centuries has settled on pages unwritten, the gates are opened only within. In ascension rites of introvert spirits, the signature of passing flesh is inscribed in the memorial garden as a note of entrance. Succeeding this initiation, all levels are accessible through death transpired as severance of the flesh and the spirit immortal. As the remnants of flesh dance to the endless pulses of the multiverse, the underlying directives in biorhythms to which these pulses are synchronized (from ego to the universe on the left hand and no ego in the void beneath the veil) and to be followed like a call of nature. Nature withholds the void that exists to the unaided eye of the celestials, and the rhythms transpire as keys. As the innerspace traveler is aligned with the order of the nine, disarray in the processes is suddenly reversible, and the liberated shall walk the brightened path that is not treaded afoot. This is Dark Buddha Rising.

If you missed it, sample the condensed edition of opening hymn, “E S O,” self-described as “the inner process of Inversum, a personal voyage into the eternal current of existence,” via Soundcloud, and you can also still view the recently released video trailer.

DARK BUDDHA RISING

“Inversum is a dark oasis that Dark Buddha Rising have lost themselves in. It really feels like the band set out to create a dark opus, and through their recording sessions, have become part of its darkness as well… with Inversum, the band is opening a new cycle to their existence.” - CVLT NATION

There's an uncomfortable mood set and in time, there is a payoff. While waiting, the listener is treated to wah drenched guitars with tones that sound like the amplifiers are on fire, howling vocals that breed anger, enmity, and sadness.” - GLACIALLY MUSICAL

“A bell is struck in a silent temple. Black clouds gather over the Himalayas. A yogi lights incense in a forest, isolated. He approaches death, and is ready for the trip.” - METAL STORM

KOWLOON WALLED CITY Partners With NPR For The Premiere Of First Single From Upcoming Grievances Full-Length; Preorder Bundles Available; Live Dates With Fight Amp Confirmed

“Lost from the start; failed by the facts; you walk in defeated; wear out your weaknesses…”
- “Backlit,” KOWLOON WALLED CITY

Grievances is the forthcoming new full-length from San Francisco’s KOWLOON WALLED CITY. Set for release next month, the band’s first offering under the Neurot Recordings banner and third studio recording overall finds the eclectic collective at their artistic apex, shifting even further from their sludgy post-hardcore roots towards a sparser, more melancholic heaviness.

On the seven-track Grievances, strings rattle, guitars crackle and blister, notes ring out, at turns bleak and beautiful — sometimes both at once. Captured and mixed by vocalist Scott Evans at Sharkbite Studios and his own Antisleep Audio, both in Oakland, the recording is honest and spacious, and intense without artifice or studio trickery. Jeff Fagundes' drums resonate in a huge room while guitarist Jon Howell’s unusual chord changes and discordant aesthetic channel Unwound and Slint against Ian Miller’s gritty, melodic bass. Evans’ shouted vocals are raw with frustration and disappointment, but without the typical veneer of macho aggression.

Today, NPR offers the first chance to hear Grievances via its third track, “Backlit.” Evans explains, “This song pretty much sums up the record. It was the first song we started working on, and one of the last ones we finished. Coincidentally, it's about impostor syndrome -- no matter how hard you work at something, it's not good enough.”

Adds NPR: "In the first single, 'Backlit,' the band dials down the sludgy distortion in favor of more repetition. Loose strings rattle violently in riffs that aren't so much slow as weighted. Kowloon Walled City seems more aware of its space, rooting inside a shimmering cymbal, a throbbing bassline or a rare squeal of feedback instead of overpowering its sound with noise or studio compression. After guitarist Scott Evans shouts the devastating line, "You walk in defeated / Wear out your weakness," the guitar solo unwinds into a nervous, Unwound-ian abstraction that works out its catharsis in bent strings on the verge of bursting."

“Backlit” is currently available for public consumption at THIS LOCATION.

Following the release of Grievances, KOWLOON WALLED CITY will join Fight Amp for a short run of West Coast shows. Running from November 1st through November 7th, the trek includes an appearance at The Day of Shred Fest in Santa Ana as well as a specialGrievances record release show in Oakland.

NEUROSIS: 30th Anniversary Shows In San Francisco & Roadburn Announced; Through Silver In Blood And Times Of Grace Vinyl Reissues Confirmed

NEUROSIS has just announced the band’s plans to celebrate three full decades together with their fans on two continents in early 2016, including shows in their native Bay Area and at Roadburn Festival in The Netherlands. Additionally, the band will release deluxe vinyl reissues of two of their most revered and long out-of-print titles; Through Silver In Blood and Times Of Grace.

As the band passes the thirty-year mark this Winter, NEUROSIS will celebrate this milestone with two stateside performances on March 4th and 5th at the Regency Ballroom, and then two more sets on April 16th and 17th headlining the massive Roadburn. At these four very special performances, the band will deliver material spanning their entire recorded lineage, from 1987’s Pain Of Mind through 2012’s Honor Found In Decay, with varied set lists at each event. These sets will span the band's entire career, showcasing NEUROSIS’ comprehensive evolution from their primitive beginnings to the seminal, epic outfit they are today, as the band’s ever evolving, sonic palette has become a template for underground music over the last three decades, and resist genre classification.

Additionally, NEUROSIS will have two of their most revered and long out-of-print titles reissued on super deluxe 180-gram double vinyl this Fall. Through Silver in Blood (1996), which Fact Magazine recently deemed the #1 best post-metal album of all time, has not been printed on vinyl in ten years, while Times Of Grace (1999) is seeing its first pressing in over fifteen years. Additionally, Grace, the 1999 TRIBES OF NEUROT companion piece to Times Of Grace, will also see a deluxe reissue, its first time ever on vinyl. Each reissue will contain reinterpretations of the original iconic artwork, will be housed in heavy duty “tip-on” jackets, and will be available in a variety of limited edition exclusive colors. The reissues are set for worldwide release on September 4th and will also include full album digital download codes.

Preorders for the reissues are now available directly through Neurosis’ own Neurot Recordings at THIS LOCATION.

NEUROSIS is currently on tour in North America, embarked on their most massive North American tour since before the turn of the millennium. Having begun on July 31st, the band crosses into Canada today for two shows — Toronto this evening, and the massive Montréal Festival where they’ll join the likes of Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gorguts and many others on Friday — followed by shows in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Richmond, Carrboro, Atlanta and New Orleans before coming to a smoldering finale in Houston on August 16th. The band is playing in cities and states which they have not visited since the 1990s during the trek, which sees NEUROSIS supported by labelmates Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth (featuring Tad Doyle of TAD and Hog Molly) for the entire trek, with additional legs of the tour also featuring The Body, Sumac, Pinkish Black and labelmates Iron Tongue.

STEVE VON TILL: A Life Unto Itself Vinyl, CD & T- Shirt Preorder Bundles Now Available!

Preorders for Steve Von Till's A Life Unto Itself, Available now from Neurot Recordings

STEVE VON TILL’s most immense, celestial solo journey yet, A Life Unto Itself was captured at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room,Marissa Nadler and Rose Windows), presenting over forty-five minutes of harrowing textures which drill their way immediately to the core of your bones, gnaw your heart’s defense mechanisms to their foundations, and invoke a wellspring of emotions. In bringing these newest visions to fruition, STEVE VON TILL was joined by viola master Eyvind Kang, pedal steel wizard J. Kardong and percussionist Pat Schowe, and enshrouded by cover art by Aaron Turner (Sumac, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Hydra Head), A Life Unto Itself conjures the man’s most diverse but wholly composed solo creations yet, recalling Harvestman and prior unaccompanied albums under his own name. A possible new bearing on navigating life seems to lie at the heart of A Life Unto Itself, but that decision is ultimately up to the listener.

A Life Unto Itself ventures into compelling uncharted territory for its maker. STEVE VON TILL's weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar provides a foundation, but a much wider variety of sonic textures are presented here. Bold and ambitious arrangements weave vintage synth, sublime strings, percussion, and electric guitars throughout these unique and expansive songs, as VON TILL's raspy whisper dives deeply inward, and speaks genuinely of visions, memories, and self-reflection in a way that feels both seasoned and exposed.

STEVE VON TILL's "In Your Wings" is streaming here at Neurot Recordings:

The title track from STEVE VON TILL'S A Life Unto Itself is still streaming HERE, also.

A Life Unto Itself will be available May 12th in the US (11th May UK/EU and 8th May in Germany). Preorder now at store.neurotrecordings.com
